It is Vesak Day in Singapore today, and I am sure many people must have taken leave tomorrow to enjoy the super long weekend. If I was there I would certainly be doing the same thing!
Over here in the US, we had Memorial Day holiday on the Monday that just passed. Either than the Christmas and New Year's Day holiday, the public holidays, or what is known as the federal holidays, are different from Singapore. The Labor Day is in September, and there is the Thanksgiving holiday as well. Not to mention the 4th of July Independence Day. Although earlier in the year there was President's day, it was not so much an official holiday (seemed like only banks were closed). I am certainly looking forward to the fireworks on the 4th of July; it must be pretty!
There are also some other festivals which is not observed in Singapore. Earlier in the month, pubs were celebrating Cinco de Mayo (yes, its a unique name!) which is a Mexican holiday to commemorate their victory over the French army in 1862. In April, there was the Jewish holiday Passover; you can read more about it here as I am no expert about these matters and shall not attempt to explain it.
