Now and then I read of interesting happenings in science, and I will highlight them here.
Green tea can be harmful in large quantities (New Scientist, 05 May 2007): Now now, I hope I did not cause you to spew that green tea you are drinking! I love green tea too, and so I had to find out for myself: How much is too much? Ten small cups a day is fine. Phew! But you are taking green tea supplements, be cautious of the amount yah?
Music made from nature's proteins (New Scientist, 03 May 2007): Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and there are 20 such amino acids. The researchers then assigned a musical note to each amino acid to make it into a tune, and protein music is born! This has been around for a while, but I never bothered to listen to it, until today. All I can say is I am glad it was not to the tune of Jaws, E.T. or some tune that gets stuck with you the whole day!
Could a virus cause a weight gain? (International Organisation of Obesity, 10th Apr 2007): This is the first time I hear of this link between weight gain (and obesity) and a viral origin. All these time I believed that it may have been inherited, or simply the wrong diet! This apparently was old news too, for this was already report ten years back <Link>. There is also this company that is will test if you have the virus, and if so, that could jolly well explain why you put on weight or had a hard time maintaining your healthy weight <Link>. Of course you must also know that there could be many factor involved in weight gain, so it may not simply be the virus. It is certainly something new that I learnt today!
