Gone with the wind

Feeling blue today, so I have decided to post a photo of something that always cheers me up. Meet the dandelion clock. It is really fun to blow them apart, just like how sometimes I wish I could just eliminate my worries and let them be carried away by the wind to some far away land.

The dandelion flower is a yellow flower, or rather it is considered as a weed to most. I do not fancy the flower per se, but when the flower matures it becomes this "globe of fine filaments" known as the dandelion clock. These are seeds which are then carried away by the wind to be dispersed away from the parent plant. The "clock" is derived from the belief that the number of blows required to completely disperse the seeds is dependent on the time of the day. Now it would be fun to blow everything away in just one blow at one o'clock!

I learnt something new in the process of writing this - did you know that the dandelion plant itself can be eaten cooked or raw, in soups, salads or as dandelion jam? Or that the flowers have been used to make dandelion wine, and the roots are used as diuretic drugs in Canada! And the list goes on! It's latex can be used as mosquito repellent, and there is even a soft drink in UK named "Dandelion and Burdock". My my, I am impressed by the dandelion plant and flower! I still love the dandelion clock best, especially the big fluffy ones...
