After bumming around yesterday, I decided today I shall be more productive and read the news and update my blog. It was a good thing I did for I found out that there is NO vitamin C in Ribena!?!
I feel soooooooooooooo cheated! :O
I have been drinking Ribena for as long as I could remember; it is my favourite drink as a kid, and my mama would get me a big bottle of the syrup each time I go back for the vacation. Heck, it is even part of my fondest memories of childhood! I have their cute water bottles in the shape of the blackcurrant too, and right up to university, I was drinking Ribena on a regular basis. After reading the reports, now I am not so sure if that would be changed to "it was my favourite drink".
NO DETECTABLE TRACE of vitamin C is totally unacceptable when the print on those ready-to-drink packets claim to contain 44 percent of the daily recommended dose of vitamin C. Although there is more vitamin C in the Ribena syrup, it is still significantly lower than that of apple juice.
"The blackcurrants IN Ribena have FOUR TIMES the vitamin C of oranges".
Who are they kidding? They made a mistake: it should have been four times LESS (or even none for that matter!). True enough, I usually drink Ribena to get that sugar rush because I believe it is/was a healthy drink - it cannot be so bad since it is from fruits right??? Now I really ponder what exactly have I been drinking - could it really have been blackcurrant juice then?
Apparently this was discovered back in 2004 by two girls doing their projects in New Zealand. If only I have read of the reports earlier! Ribena, you just lost a fan.
