VA tech incident

What happened this week in Virginia Tech is still on my mind. I first read it on MSN homepage soon after it happened, and I was thinking "Oh no, not again!".

The next day when I was taking the shutter provided by the university between its undergraduate campus and medical campus, the students were discussing the incident. I overheard some saying that their parents were really worried and had called to check on them. One can definitely understand their concerns. After all, Virginia is a two-hour journey by car and there are families here with children in that school.

Even my parents were worried too, from the other side of the world. My dad was like "Must be more careful yah? If you hear gun shots, hide or run! It is not firecrackers ah, they don't play with firecrackers there!" This whole incident brings on the age old debate: guns, are they good or bad? To ban them or not to? Obviously the answer is depending on whose hands the weapon is in. I read somewhere that if the school had not banned guns, perhaps more lives would have been saved. This view worries me. It could jolly well result in more bloodshed right? It also makes me wonder if it is really the issue of ownership of guns, the society itself, or simply a deviant from the society who is bent on slaying people on his demise?

Then there is the issue of the videos sent to NBC. Broadcasting them is a bad idea, because there will be copy cats and the exploitation to gain more viewers. In addition there were also reports that Scientologist were milking the situation to their advantage! Here is the link.

Sometimes I lay awake in bed wondering what has the world come to; would I want to have children and bring them up in today's complicated society? Well the truth is, I fall asleep quite soon after, so I don't know the answer to that question. So long as I do not get jolted awake to the sounds of "firecrackers"...
