I applaud Singapore's first Bring Your Own Bag Day (BYOBD)! The campaign was to encourage people to use reusable bags instead of plastic bags. In case you missed it, it was on April 18th, and this initiative will continue on the first Wednesday of every month. It is definitely a good start and reminder to Singapore citizens of their part to save the earth (we sure love campaigns, don't we?). Statistics show we used a whopping 2.5 billion plastic bags in a year- all these bags from just a tiny red dot on the map!
But why was BYOBD (we love acronyms too! MOE, COE, SPRING etc and now BYOBD??) on a Wednesday? Why not on a Saturday? Many people go shopping on Saturdays, and more bags would be saved on Saturdays when families do their grocery shopping than on boring-slow-mid-week-Wednesdays where most are stuck in offices. On the bright side, it is a start to saving the environment.
Someday the Singapore government may decide to impose a plastic tax law where we would have to buy the plastic bag in addition to all our goods, given that such laws are already in place in some countries. I can imagine the kiasu-ness of some should that happen: Tomorrow must pay for bags already ah? Then today must go NTUC and take more plastic bag home! Must also mobilise the whole family to do that! But unfortunately for that auntie and her family, I do not think they will get any extra bags, for the campaign extends to sales personal. Too bad for her!
Do your part too okay? Don't waste plastic bags! *waggle the finger at you*
