Maryland Renaisance Festival 2007

Yesterday, Fairy God sister, Ian, the Husby and I headed out to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, an annual event at Crownsville!

I have never quite seen so many cars lined up in the field; as we arrived in the afternoon, we had to walk a distance to the entrance of the festival. Check out the red arrow in the photography on the right which signifies where we were headed!

It certainly felt like we travelled back in time; take a look at what costumes some people wore in the photograph on the left! The atmosphere was different and it was exciting to explore the area. There were stores, or rather termed artisans then, renting and selling costumes, as well as goblets and mugs among many other things.

Taken from the program booklet at the entrance:
Honoured Guests: Welcome to the village of Revel Grove in the county of Oxfordshire in England. The year is 1540 and King Henry VIII and his Court have arrived in the village to meet Henry's intended bride - Anna of Cleves. Mayor Hugh Wetherby has prepared a spectacular harvest celebration to mark this historic event.

When I first learnt of this festival, I was puzzled by the fact that the Renaissance occurred in Europe, but here they are recreating it in the US. Questions aside, I like the line that says: The King commands all who enter to make merry. Huzzah!
Where is Wally? ;) It sure reminds me of that!
As to any of such event, crowds of people would attend and the place was packed. The red arrow is meant to draw your attention to someone selling large pretzels on a simple stand.

Jousting at the Joust Arena! There were four knights, and cries of Huzzah! could be heard from the crowd despite the sweltering heat of the afternoon sun - imagine how the knights must feel in their heavy amour!

Meet Johnny Fox, the swordswallower Extraordinaire at the Royal Stage! He was a great performer and it was very entertaining.

And of course, who could forget the food? From this perspective, the smoked turkey leg was as large as a person! Just pulling your leg there (pun not intended!), but this was a regular size turkey ham; it is hard to imagine how large size would be like! On the right was the cheesecake on a stick, covered with dark chocolate. Oh, so sinful yet how wish I could have one more now!

Another Where's Wally photograph! I love the trees in the compound and how the sunlight shines through the foliage, it certainly has that village feel to the place.

Thank you Master Ian and Lady Fairy God sister for bringing us there, we had a wonderful time and next year, we shall go again! =)
