It has been a really bad start to this weekend, all thanks to three little words - urinary tract infection.
Having previously studied the symptoms and learnt about the infection in class, I have always thought that the possibility of me getting UTI was small. Granted that more women than men are prone to UTI, but I felt I always drink lots of water, so I should have been fine.
But unexpected things happen.
The main reason that I came down with UTI was because I did not drink enough water while at work yesterday. It could have also been that it is now winter, and I feel less need to drink water. The first signs of trouble started at close to midnight. By then, all the clinics were closed, and I had to wait till morning for any consultation. I could not sleep the entire night too, as I felt the need to go to pee frequently. By 3am, I woke the Husby up as I was feeling rather unbearable. Alas, the earliest clinic only opened at 8am. (Now this is when I miss the 24hr clinics in Singapore so badly)
The best part of my terrible ordeal has yet to come.
By 10am, I had seen the doctor, started on my medication (three-day course of antibiotics) and was feeling rather happy that the infection would soon clear.
At 11am, I came home and crawled into bed for the much needed sleep.
At 12pm or so, I woke up feeling really uncomfortable. I went to the bathroom and saw my entire face was swollen.
Soon after alerting the Husby, I fainted.
According to the Husby, I was blacked-out for 2 seconds, but that felt like eternity to me. The strange thing was I felt that I was dreaming for a while, then I realised there was this black dark place. Soon after, I hear the Husby calling me really loudly. It was like him calling me back to reality, felt a little like an out of body experience. I felt the carpet, and was wondering to myself how in the world did I end up here?
The most terrifying part was that I could not see him; all I saw was darkness.I was so very afraid I was going to lose my sight. My hearing was muffled too. It caused me great fear and frustration, and only cleared up a while later. I later learnt from the Husby that he was so worried I was going into a fit.
Fortunately that did not happen. What was happening was that I had a severe reaction to the antibiotics, and nausea was setting in too. At least I did not have difficult breathing, which meant the allergy could be potentially life-threatening.
The Husby drove real quick to the clinic again, where I was given a shot to fight the allergy, and placed two bags of IV drip. It was close to 4pm when I was checked out of there.
Right now, my face is still a little swollen , which is kinda odd because I now have double eyelids instead of singles. Let's hope my new course of antibiotics will not give me any allergy reactions, otherwise I would have to be rushed to A&E tonight. *keeps my fingers crossed*
It never felt so good to be alive! Especially after that fainting episode which really freaked the Husby and myself. I would not want to know how things would turn out if the Husby was not around.
The moral of the story: drink more fluids, and never underestimate those three little words.
