For the love of cooking and eating

Braised leeks and pork belly: not the prettiest photo, but it sure was tasty! :D
When Jomel published the Braised leek and pork belly recipe on her blog, it immediately attracted my attention. It was both the combination of the pretty photo of the yummy dish and that it reminded me of a dish that my grandma had made before, so I knew I had to try it.  It took us a while to get everything because I could not find the leeks. In fact I have never cooked with leeks before, and so we had to google to see which are the parts we could eat :) The dish was a great success!! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe Jomel, if not for the fact that it is deep fried, I would certainly want to eat it every week! :D

This pork belly dish is actually the third dish I have tried from Jomel's blog. The first was the minced beef, potatoes and carrots - something that I grew up eating at my uncle's place. That launched us into a frantic search for Kecap Manis which unfortunately is not a staple in the chinese or korean supermarkets. I finally found it online, paid like 10USD for a bottle, only to see that it was going to expire in like one more month. So cheated. Then we tried the baked stuffed chicken wings, or rather the marinate only as we were too lazy to stuff the chicken wings. It still remains as one of the Husby's favorite dishes. I hope you don't mind me linking your food blog Jomel, thanks for sharing the recipes!

In other food news, we have been making french toast lately! By we of course, i mean me waking up in the morning on weekends and declaring that it would be nice to have french toast, laze around somemore and then stumbling downstairs to find it ready- lucky me ;)) The Husby followed this recipe from Simply recipes, and I typically drown it in maple syrup. Nothing beats the smell of coffee, cinnamon and eggs in the morning!
Thank you Husby! :)

Last Sunday we also whipped up some chicken curry from all the spices together with the Baba's meat curry powder I bought online. To my surprise it turned out pretty good! On a separate note altogether, I discovered a new favorite coffee drink, thanks to our friends who came to visit last week and stayed over for three days. So sweet of YC to bring with her coffee all the way from Ipoh! Funny thing is I would hardly drink any of these coffee when I am home. With Starbucks prices jumping to almost $5, I have decided to stop going there for coffee and this will definitely be a good substitute. We also had a mooncake overload last month, having spent a total of $60 on three boxes of mooncake. I found it really hard to resist the teochew mooncake with all the fried pastry. So unhealthy right!

Next up I cannot wait to try seafood pasta in a paper bag. That pretty wraps up the babbling in the food news and it is back to grant writing now...
